How to Make Your Bouquet Last Longer: 7 Tips from Our Florists
A fresh bouquet from a good florist should last 7–12 days with the right care. Here are the seven things our Miami florists recommend to every customer.
1. Trim the stems right away
Cut 1–2 cm off each stem at a 45-degree angle before placing them in water. This opens the stems so they drink properly.
2. Use a clean vase and fresh water
Bacteria is the enemy. Wash the vase, fill it with lukewarm water, and add the flower food packet if one came with your bouquet.
3. Remove leaves below the waterline
Leaves sitting in water rot quickly and foul the water. Strip them off.
4. Change the water every 2–3 days
Fresh water, a quick rinse of the vase, and a fresh trim each time — this alone can add days of life.
5. Keep bouquets cool and out of direct sun
Miami heat is brutal on cut flowers. Keep arrangements indoors, away from windows with direct sun and away from fruit bowls (ripening fruit releases ethylene gas).
6. Mist delicate petals
Hydrangeas, garden roses, and peonies love a light mist of water on their petals.
7. Remove wilting blooms promptly
One fading flower can speed up the decline of the rest. Pull it out and the bouquet keeps going.
